Microsoft 365 E7 (Frontier) — what changes for AI in your business

· Stephen Betts

Microsoft launched the M365 E7 ("Frontier") suite on 1 May 2026. At $99/user/month it bundles a lot: Microsoft 365 Copilot, the new Microsoft Agent 365, Work IQ contextual configuration, advanced Defender / Intune / Purview, and the Entra Suite. For most of our clients on E3 or E5 + standalone Copilot, the question is whether E7 is worth moving to.

Short answer: probably yes, but not for the headline reason. Here's our take.

What E7 actually changes

E3 + standalone Microsoft 365 Copilot is roughly $66 + $30 = $96/user/month, so the E7 price point sits almost on top of it. Where E7 wins is the bundle around Copilot: Agent 365 (Microsoft's AI agent governance product), Work IQ (contextual data configuration that makes Copilot smarter on your tenant), and a fuller security stack. Going from "Copilot tacked on E3" to "E7 as the foundation" is a step up in capability for the same money.

The strategic shift is bigger than the line-item swap. E7 turns Microsoft into your primary AI surface — and Microsoft Agent 365 becomes the platform you build bespoke AI agents on top of (rather than rolling your own from raw Azure OpenAI). For most Conscierra clients, that's the right direction.

What E7 doesn't change

Adopting E7 doesn't automatically give you ISO/IEC 42001:2023 alignment, AI risk-tier classification, human-in-the-loop architecture across your business processes, or the per-jurisdiction regulatory posture that regulators actually audit. Microsoft ships the platform; the discipline is still yours to apply.

Where Conscierra fits: we deliver the governance framework that wraps Agent 365 and the bespoke domain agents that sit on top of the general-purpose platform Microsoft provides. See AI Enablement for our service-line detail.

Should you move to E7 now?

Yes if any of these apply:

  • You're on E3 + standalone Copilot today (price-equivalent move; capability up)
  • You want Agent 365 + Work IQ without a separate purchase conversation
  • You're planning bespoke AI agent work in the next 6 months
  • You want the upgraded Defender / Purview stack for compliance posture

Stay where you are if:

  • You're on E3 without Copilot and don't plan to adopt AI in the next 12 months (the AI bundle is the value driver; without that, E3 still fits)
  • You're on Business Premium and migrating to enterprise SKUs is a bigger decision than E5 vs E7 alone
  • You're on E5 and the additional features in E7 over E5 (mostly the AI stack) aren't immediate priorities

The 90-day plan

For clients ready to move, we run a structured 90-day adoption:

  1. Strategy Workshop (week 1): half-day, current-state AI readiness + 12/24-month roadmap. Output: written strategy doc.
  2. Tenant configuration (weeks 2-4): E7 rollout, Agent 365 governance, Work IQ contextual data, Purview integration where applicable, pilot user selection.
  3. Pilot programme (weeks 5-8): 10–20 users, measured against the baseline. Best-practice prompt library for your industry. Training.
  4. Tenant-wide rollout + 90-day measurement (weeks 9-12): full deployment, usage monitoring, governance setup, executive briefing on the measured outcomes.

Pricing for the rollout services sits in the AUD $5K–$30K band depending on tenant size — see pricing for detail. The licence cost is between you and Microsoft.

One quiet caveat on AI in your business

AI Enablement isn't a magic-wand trick. The clients we see get real ROI from this work are the ones who already have decent process documentation, clean data sources, and a leadership team willing to take time on the change-management piece. If you have none of those, the Strategy Workshop is the place to start — not the rollout. We'll tell you honestly whether you're ready or whether 6 months of foundation work comes first.
